Hello Students and Families! I'm very excited for this week in Writing class! We will be working on our family coat of arms project. This will be the first major writing grade.
Students will be required to create a coat of arms that includes six pictures/symbols to reflect their family heritage. Students will also write a six paragraph essay describing the pictures/symbols they chose. Rubrics will be given out tomorrow so students know exactly how their coat of arms and essay will be graded. Tomorrow I will also provide samples that Mrs. McCabe and I have created to represent our families.
Parents, you can help your child by sharing what you know about your family heritage. Students are welcome to use traditional coat of arms symbols as well as pictures they think of on their own. Some traditional coat of arms symbols and their meanings can be found here: http://www.oshel.com/symbols.htm.
On another note, Graded Work Folders will go home tomorrow with graded Social Studies, Spelling, and Reading assignments. Please sign the yellow sheet and return the folders to school with your child. Parent/Teacher Conference request forms will also go home tomorrow. Just a reminder: Field trip permission slips and money are due TOMORROW! Have a great week!
This week we accomplished a lot in class! We took our Geography quiz and the majority of students earned A's and B's! Nice job, students! In writing, we learned some strategies that good writers use to generate ideas for personal narratives. Next week, we will start our Social Studies unit, "Dueling Documents." This unit uses the duel between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr as a case study in which students explore historical thinking and the question, why might there be different (competing) accounts of the same event? On Monday, Graded Work folders will go home with Math and Science assignments as well as the 5th grade newsletter. Please sign and return these folders to school with your child. Don't forget about field trip permission slips as these are due September 30th. Enjoy the beautiful weather and don't forget to get some physical activity in this weekend!
The second week of the school year has officially come to a close! This week we finished our DCAS testing as well as our social studies review unit on geography. On Monday, there will be a quiz so study, study, study! Next week we will begin writer's workshop and start on our "Coat of Arms" project. Graded work folders will be sent home Monday. Parents, please sign and return the folder to school with your child. Have a great weekend everyone!
